Microsoft provides many tools to help your keep your computer performing optimally. The MSCONFIG utility has a lot of handy features for you to take advantage of. You can open this utility by typing it in the Run prompt when you click on the Start Menu. The System Configuration window will open up.

There are several tabs: General; SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, BOOT.INI, Services, Startup, and Tools.

In the General Tab is where you indicate how you want your computer to start up: Normal, Diagnostic or Selective. Here is where you can Launch the System restore and create restore points.

In the SYSTEM.INI tab is where you can enable and disable drivers and other features of the system. The WIN.INI tab is where you find file extensions and fonts and can enable or disable these.

The BOOT.INI tab is where your boot options are found.

You can enable and disable services in the Services Tab. You have the ability to hide the Microsoft Services allowing you to only go through those that may be safe to disable.

The Startup Tab is where you turn off any programs that you do not want to automatically startup when your computer boots up. This will not delete or uninstall the programs.

The Tools Tab has other tools and utilities that you can use to improve the performance of your computer. They include a Registry Editor, Security Center, Network Diagnostics, Internet Options, System Properties, Task Manager and more.
