There are many causes of why your computer may be running slower than before. If you are on a network then it is possible that there are some unused connections that could be the cause of computer unresponsiveness. In order to share files on a network many times network drives are mapped. This allows one computer to read and write the files found on another computer. It is meant to make access as easy as if the files were found right on your own computer.

The issue with speed that network drives affect is that whenever Windows stards up it attempts to connect to all network drive. What this means is that if one of the computers is not running on the network you computer will search and search for it. This takes away processing time and speed and can cause your computer to run significantly slower.

So, if you do not really need instant access to another computers files then you may wish to disconnect these network drives and use them only when you need them. You can disconnect any network drive by opening up the My Computer icon, then go to Tools and click on “disconnect network drive” after selecting the drive you do not need.

You may realize up to a forty percent increase of the speed of your computer once you disconnect your network drive. This is a real improvement in the speed of your computer.
