There are some simple things you can do to help improve the speed you experience when you are surfing the internet. The first thing you should do especially if you download a lot of stuff is to change the default limit of concurrent downloads. You can have up to sixteen files downloading at the same time from the same server if you want to. You make the change to the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

Add a new value called DWORD then add an entry named MaxConnectionsPerServer and set the value to sixteen.

Another thing you can do to improve the performance of your computer is to disable the indexing service. Indexing consumes a lot of system resources and this can have a negative effect on your computers performance. When you disable indexing you will not only free up space on your hard drive you can improve the performance of it as well. You can disable indexing in the Services tab of the Administrative Tools in the Control panel. Just right click and choose “Disable”.

The default setting for cache in Internet Explorer is set to hold a large amount of cache. This can take up precious space on your hard drive as well as causing your disk to be fragmented. One Saturday night, I was streaming through a video website watching an episode of my favorite television show when suddenly my internet connection disappeared. I tried to check the wireless router, no problem was detected. I tried a reboot but still no internet connection. Confused and clueless, I asked assistance from my internet provider. The first question that came into my mind was; “Did I pay my bill?” A call to the internet provider costumer service answered my question. Yes, I did pay my bills. The morning after, still with no internet connection detected, I sought help from a computer technician. It was then when I found out that the LAN cable connecting my router to the phone line was defective and needed to be replaced.

The LAN cable is the conductor and the path in which the internet connection runs to provide internet to our PC’s. Since in the set up of server and routers the LAN cables are hidden, it is usually the last thing we suspect when there is a problem in the internet connection. The most common cause of damage to the LAN cable is the tearing of the cable cover due to constant friction and heat, the damage caused by animals like rats biting the cable and the expiration of the cable.

To maximize the lifespan of our LAN cables, we must choose the recommended brands. The quality of the LAN cable is very important to the speed of the internet connection. A damaged of a single microfiber inside the LAN cable can change the speed of the internet connection.

If you have no trouble whatsoever connecting to the Internet through your ISP (Internet Service Provider) you might not think the least bit about this. However, if you are constantly seeing your Internet connection going in and out and you know that it is not due to bad weather (and you are current on your bill) you need to consider something else here. You need to think about the fact that you Internet connection settings and bandwidth settings are slightly off. They might also not be at the levels that you need them to be.

This is one problem that you may or many not be able to fix on your own. The first thing to check is your Internet connectivity for Windows itself. To do that you need to consult your Owner’s/User Manual as each PC is different. You can also contact your ISP and ask a technician there what the settings are that they use. Also ask what the settings would be that you need to ensure peak performance and continuous connection.

If you are not able to get anywhere this way then you might want to talk with someone that specialize in matters like this, someone that is in the IT – Information Technology – field. That person might be able to give you a clue about what is going on and what to do about it. This is not saying that you are always going to be able to find your answers this way, just giving you a place to start.

There are several problems that will cause issues with your computer system and may even cause it to crash. If you use up all the space on your hard drive or are infected by a virus you may find that you cannot even use your system. If you have to restore your system it can be a painful process especially if you have not backed up all your information.

There are many temporary files and cached files that are created on your computer system that you may not be aware of. Programs will automatically save your documents while you are typing, when you open up links on websites files are downloaded and your internet history keeps information as links to make navigating to pages is quicker. All these things accumulate over time. If you do not clear out these temporary files on a routine basis they may cause your system to perform poorly. You can run a registry cleaner or the Disk Cleanup utility to remove these files.

DLL errors may also cause problems with how your system responds. DLLs are files that contain instructions or data telling your computer how a program or piece of hardware should work. Sometimes these files go missing or become corrupt. The system scanner can be used to fix these DLL errors.

Registry errors are other problems that will cause performance issues in your computer. Run a registry cleaner about once a week to prevent them from becoming a problem on your system.
