If you are trying to restore the performance of your computer one of the first places to begin is with the programs that start automatically when your computer boots up and run in the background. You will see some of these programs in your taskbar but others are hidden and you may not even be aware that they are running.
All these programs are stealing trace amounts of both memory and processing time from your computer. The tool that Microsoft has provided to manage these programs is the Msconfig.exe. You just type this command at the command prompt. In the Startup Tab is where you will find a listing of all processes and programs that startup automatically. You can choose to continue to allow them to startup or you can uncheck them and they will no longer automatically start. Remember that unchecking does not un-install the programs so you will continue to be able to start them up whenever you need them. In order for these changes to take place you will have to restart your computer.
Another tool you can use is freeware and called Autoruns. It will also list all the programs that are set to automatically start up and allow you to turn them off. It is an alternative that you might prefer as well to the msconfig.exe utility. You can also use this utility to set the preferences on how your desktop is laid out as well.
