One thing that not many people are familiar with is the power settings on their Windows 7 computer. Choosing the right plan will make your computer faster. It is easy to select the right plan for better performance. However, this could bite you if you are the kind that wants to save electricity. Use the control panel and select Security/Power options. You would then click on the button that creates a power option and select the high performance option. Three different power plans are available to choose from on your computer.
These are “Balanced”, “Power Saver” and “High Performance”. The high performance is a kick in the pants and will help Windows 7 work faster and more efficiently than before. The only drawback is that it loves to eat electricity. If you love to save electricity this option is not that wise a choice. However the high performance option maximizes your computer so that it works faster with less problems. This is certainly one way to power up your performance. Many don’t understand the reason behind this or do not use it to make changes to their computers.
A faster computer allows you to get more done in less time with a better functioning computer. Would you choose a slow computer over a faster one? To many, this really is not that difficult a choice as far as which you would choose. This is one option about making Windows 7 faster that more people should be exploring more often so that they can get a faster computer.

When your files are fragmented, the performance of your computer is badly affected, slowing it down. When disk fragmentation occurs, the hard disk is searched finding files that must be put back again together. There is usually a longer response time to this. To speed up Windows 7, you can use a Disk Defragmenter (sometimes referred to as Defrag). It is another Windows tool; its job is to consolidate fragmented folders and files on the hard disk of your PC. Your files are arranged in such a way as they occupy just a single space on the hard disk. When you have files that are stored free of fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk becomes speeded up.
Disk defragmentation, in order to speed up Windows 7, should be done on a weekly basis, along with the Disk Clean Up tool. Other times when you should run this utility are (1) when a large number of files is added to your had drive, (2) if the free disk space has reached 15% or less, and (3) when you install a Windows new version or new programs.
Another utility that can speed up Windows 7 is the Error Checking tool. Bad sectors are developed as you use your computer’s hard drive. These bad sectors also slow down your operating system. So it is also as important to run the Error Checking utility that scans the hard drive to find bad sectors. It also scans for errors on file systems to see if certain folders or files are misplaced. Using your computer daily requires you to run important utilities to help your PC maintain the efficient speed.

First, check to make sure that you hard drive is not almost full. Having some extra space can improve your PC’s load times and running speed. I suggest having at least 20-30% of your hard drive free at all times. Having too many programs and files can really slow down your start up time.
Spyware and Adware can have a detrimental effect on computer speed. There are free ways available online to download software that deletes spyware and adware from your computer. It is recommended to run spyware and adware checks at least once a week, as malware can easily become a problem fast.
If you’re really having no luck with the above steps, it may be time to invest in a RAM upgrade. RAM can be purchased at any store like BestBuy and will give your computer more memory to deal with when running multiple programs. These stores will also install it professionally if you don’t feel comfortable with PC repair, but there are guides available online for RAM upgrades.
Another thing to do is to go through all the settings and verify that the entries are best suited for your needs in order to optimize your computer. It is important to have all updates installed for any software, devices and the operating system as it is critical to a peak operating system. This is not a difficult process and you can set it to be performed automatically.

You can face the same issues with your Win 7 OS computer as with any other operating system including freezing and hanging up. But there are procedures you can perform to improve your Win 7 computers performance.
It is possible to encounter these errors at any time that as well as the fact that there are many things that might cause these errors to occur. Registry errors, deficient amount of RAM, faulty programs could all be the culprits causing the errors. When repair these errors you will see an improvement the performance of your Windows 7 computer.
Problems affecting the hard drive can create problems with your computers performance. You can correct these problems by using the disk defragmenter utility. Many times problems with programs are the cause system problems. If this is occurring you can try un-installing and re-installing the software. Also be sure to have all your software programs updated on a regular basis.
ReadyBoost is another option for Windows 7 computer. ReadyBoost can be used to speed up your PC by adding non-volatile flash memory. It uses a USB flash drive or a memory card—to improve performance without having to add additional memory. This is an easy and inexpensive method to increase the amount of RAM in your PC.
Other things you can do to improve the performance of your computer is to eliminate any unnecessary icons on the desktop. The icons on your computers desktop use up memory depriving it from other tasks that might otherwise need it more.

You might be surprised to find that your hardware may be the cause of why your computer boots up slowly. The boot process involves initializing and loading up hardware and their drivers. That is why it is very important to keep updated all your systems drivers. But this may require that you check the manufacturers web sites on a regular basis. You should also verify that the drivers are for the version of operating system you are currently running.
In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.
As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.
The network card of your PC can also present a substantial drain on the time it takes your computer to startup. Enabled network cards take up time locating network addresses. It many network protocols are set up then it can take a significant amount of time for all this to try to connect to load up. If you have a home network set to assign IP addressed automatically you can speed things up by giving your computers a permanent IP address.

RAM is what the computer uses to operate programs and surf the internet. Unlike the memory of the hard drive, RAM is memory used for temporary operations which will not be saved to the computer. The less RAM available to use, the slower the computer will run. Opening the Performance tab of Task Manager will display how much of the total available RAM is currently being used by the computer. If the RAM usage is high (more than 50%), adding more RAM would certainly help.
Think of the hard drive like a bookshelf full of books or DVDs. Would finding a specific movie or book be faster if the shelf was organized in alphabetical order and/or by genre? Like a bookshelf, a computer operates better when its hard drive is kept organized. Using a good defrag program regularly will ensure the hard drive remains neat and orderly thus making it easier for the computer to find files and programs.
But after doing all the above if your want to spend money you should get the biggest bang for the buck. Increasing system RAM is that choice. You can either add RAM or use an alternate virtual version with Ready Boost that uses a flash USB drive as RAM.
Older computer systems need more help that new ones but you can improve their performance as well. Begin by removing all old and unused software. This will free up disk space that your older system may desperately need. You can use the Disk Cleanup utility and MSCONFIG tool to clear out programs and other unnecessary items including temporany Windows and Internet files.
After cleaning up the hard drive of your computer you should run the Disk Defragment utility to re-organize the drive for its best performance.

There are many ways to diagnosis what may be causing your computer to run slowly. If you are experiencing problems with speed in computers it is a common complaint. After purchasing a new computer you use is for quite some time without any problems then it seems, all of a sudden, to take longer to save files, open applications or start up. The thing that is an issue is there are many possible things that can be the root cause of your computer to slow down. This makes diagnosing the root cause somewhat difficult at times.
If you notice a sudden decrease in the speed of your computer you should think back about any changes you may have made to it recently. Trying to focus on the time immediately prior to the slowness might help you pin down the exact cause. Newly installed software or hardware may be the culprit or even if you visited a new web site that may have installed spy or adware on your PC.
If, however, you have not added any new hardware or software you should reboot your computer to see if it fixes your issues. If none of these are the cause of the problem then you should check to see if your computer has enough resources available. Do you have enough room on the disk drive? Is there enough RAM and do you have an adequate video card? Try clearing out all unnecessary items and defragging the hard drive to see if this helps improve the performance of your PC.
If after you have performed these tasks your computer is still running slowly you many have to consult a computer professional.

There are five simple things you can do to keep your computer maintained and operating at peak performance. They include freeing up space on the disk drive, speeding up access to data, detecting and repairing disk errors, protecting your system for infections from spyware, adware and other malware, and using ReadyBoost to add additional RAM.
When you free up disk space you ensure that the computers processor has the space it needs to write the temporary items that it needs to. If your drive is eighty-five percent or more full you definitely need to use the Disk Cleanup utility. This tool will scan the hard drive and find all items that are safe to delete. Next you should also un-install and software programs you do not need or use.
After you cleanup the hard drive you need to run the Disk Defragmenter utility. This tool will scan the hard drive and reorganize all the data into a move them to a more compact area of the drive. When you run this utility be sure to close out of all windows, files and programs.
Disk errors are another source of problems related to system speed. There is the Error check utility that will find and repairs these errors automatically. Any bad sectors or missing file and program links are found and repaired.
If you perform these processes on a weekly basis you can ensure that your computer will run optimally.
