Many new computers now are packed with programs that you might not want and might not be able to use. Some of these programs are the limited edition versions of such programs that PC manufacturers include in the computer hoping that you might want to try, find that you can use, and then purchase to upgrade to new versions. However, if you decide you do not want these programs but let them stay on your computer, these software will slow down your PC because they are also using memory, processing power and disk space like the other usable programs.
Uninstalling all the programs you do not use and don’t have plans of using is one good method of optimizing your Windows. Delete all software that are manufacturer-installed, including those that you installed yourself but do not want to use anymore. Even older PCs might have manufacturer-installed programs that you never knew or noticed. Maybe you have already forgotten about it. If you notice your computer slowing down, try deleting these programs and see if your unit runs faster.

Many programs start automatically as your Windows starts. They are designed that way. Utility programs such as disk cleaners, virus scanners and back up tools most often run at the same time as start up, and you don’t see them because they are quietly hiding in the background. You might not have an idea these programs are even running. These kinds of software should not be deleted, but disabled, so they will not load at the time of start up.

As you use your personal computer continually, it is apparent that you will experience a deteriorated performance of your PC. This problem is usually caused by a cluttered Windows registry. This registry is the center of all Windows operating system, where the hardware and software configuration data of your PC are stored. All the information related to user profiles, various property settings of your system, and installed software and hardware are contained in the registry. Your system always refer to the registry for information whenever your PC is in use.

This continued use of your PC allows a lot of redundant and erroneous information to find their way into the registry. These are the files that make the registry grow and get cluttered, thus a reduction in its performance. A large and cluttered registry often result in errors. Some errors can even make your system unbootable, a severe damage to the system.
Cleaning the Windows registry is a very important task. While you can clean the registry yourself, it is not advised that you do it manually. Once you make a mistake in editing, it can cause damage to your Windows system which cannot be corrected anymore. Using a registry cleaner is the best method of keeping your registry free from unwanted information. As there has become a great demand for maintaining a clean registry, some people developed registry cleaner tools that you can purchase over the internet.

If your computer’s Windows is running so slowly, you can do two things to improve its speed and performance. You can turn off visual effects, and check for possible infection by viruses and spyware.

1. Disabling some of Windows visual effects might not be acceptable to some computer users, particularly those who prefer appearance over performance. This is alright if your PC is fast enough, but if it is taking so much time to restart and to function, then maybe you need to turn off the visual effects one by one. You can also let Windows do this task for you. Some of the 20 visual effects that can be turned off are the transparent glass look, how menus open and close, and if shadows must be displayed.

2. Checking your computer for viruses and spyware infection is another method of Windows optimization. Spyware is a type of program that is installed without your consent. You can use Windows Defender to check for spyware. You’ll know if you’re infected if your PC gives a performance which is slower than normal, or there are unexpected messages frequently popping up on your computer. But don’t wait for the virus symptoms to appear. You can check beforehand by scanning your computer with an antivirus program.

Preventing virus infection is the best way to deal with it. Keep an up to date antivirus software running on your PC always. Sometimes, despite these precautions your PC become infected with virus, and you don’t have any choice bu to remove it.

Configuring your computer’s paging file is one method of Windows optimization. The paging file is a type of system file hidden on your computer’s hard disk and used by Windows when it runs out of actual RAM (Random Access Memory). The paging file and RAM make up virtual memory. By default, Windows controls it own paging file, which is not a good system, because Windows will not stop increasing and decreasing the size of the paging file. This most often results in slow access to disks and file fragmentation.

If your computer often trashes the hard drive, it means that the virtual file management is not that good. It also means that your unit do not have enough RAM and the operating system of your computer is badly affected. To enhance performance, you can move the paging file to a different partition and on a different hard disk drive. This move will enable Windows to handle I/O requests more quickly.
However, there is a downside to moving the paging file from its boot partition to a different partition. Windows will not be able to provide debugging information in case of a STOP ERROR message. Troubleshooting this message can result in extended downtime for your computer.

So maybe a more optimal solution is to create two paging files, one on the boot partition and one on another partition that is less busy. When you do this, you can avoid the paging file being fragmented. It would not need to expand to satisfy the extra requirement for virtual memory.
